Jets Face Fierce Competition in Coquitlam
The Kelowna AquaJets had 48 swimmers representing the team over the weekend in three different meets. While 14 Jets were close to home competing in Vernon at Regional and Jamboree competitions, 34 swimmers took to the Coqihuilla for a competitive event down in Coquitlam. “This meet is a very competitive and very gritty meet. It is in a phase of the season when the swimmers are very tired, yet asked to get up and race fast” explain Head Coach Peter Wilkins. The meet hosts a only 8 clubs, with 4 of them consistently placing in the top 5 in the Province. The Jets placed 5th this year with 1479 points up from a 7th place finish last season with only 428 points.
AquaJets rose to the challenge of the fierce competition breaking two club records and bringing away 15 top 3 finishes and 47 finals, an increase over last years performance. The 12 and under girls 4x50 medley relay team consisting of Axana Merckx, Jenna Butterworth, Madison Kornell and Emily Epp earned a bronze while they lowered the existing club record set last season by a full 3 seconds. Teammate Josh Zakala dropped a massive 11 seconds off his own record in the 400 Free completing the race in 4 minutes and 17 seconds placing 2nd . Zakala also went on to place 1st in the 50 and 100 Free, 200 IM and 200 Breast, 2nd in 200 Free, 100 Breast and 100 Back, and 3rd in 100 Fly. Kjel Cartier and Jenna Butterworth also earned gold medal swims in the 50 Free and 200 Breast. Finishing 3rd in the 100 Breast was Butterworth, in the 100 fly Madison Kornell, and the 200 Free Katie Dunlop. Earning new Provincial standard times, Skye Kinnear made her first AAA time in the 100 Breast and Noah Robertson made his AA in the 200 Back.
In Vernon, Lucy Hill had five 1st places finishes in 100 Free, 200 IM, 50 Back, Breast and Fly. Alexa Moran and Tristan Freiss also placed first in the 50 Free. Earning 2nd places finishes was Taylor Desrosier and Kaelyn Willms (100 Free) Maggie Wilson (50 Free), and Freiss (50 Back). Capturing 3rd place Hallie Jenkins (200 Back). The largest improvement for the Jets came from Taylor Desrosier and Brandon Mullin with 15% improvements in the 100 Fly and 100 IM. Swimmers with 100% best times on the weekend were: Sabrina Akins, Jenna Butterworth, Nicola Crichton, Megan Elkin, Emily Epp, Sydney Hayes, Lucy Hill, Hallie Jenkins, Miya MacNeil, Cailin McNeely, Brandon Mullin, Quinn Payer, Randi Thompson, and Josh Zakala.
Wilkins says “It is great to see the club continuing to develop depth from the team, with more swimmers achieving new time standards, earning second swims and top 3 placing. I am very pleased with the start to the season”. In one weeks time the Jets will be hosting the Fall Invitational at the H20 Center, one of two meets scheduled before the Christmas Holidays.
